Step 1
One of the most famous and highest mountains in Kazakhstan is the Zailiyskiy Alatau. It is located in the south-east of the republic. This is the northern ridge of the Tien Shan mountain system.

In the central part of the Tien Shan, just at the junction of the borders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and China, there is one of the most beautiful peaks and the highest point of Kazakhstan - Khan-Tengri peak. Its height is 6,995 meters above sea level.

The peak in the form of a pointed pyramid at sunset acquires a reddish hue, for which it is sometimes called Kantau (Bloody Mountain). Many climbers of the world dream of climbing Khan-Tengri peak.

Another picturesque corner of the Trans-Ili Alatau is the Turgen Gorge. There are hot springs, lakes, springs here. Often, tourists head to the gorge to admire the waterfalls. Connoisseurs of ancient history are attracted by rock paintings, Saka burial mounds and burial grounds, imprints of plants that grew in this area thousands of years ago.

The mountain is shrouded in many legends. For example, Buddhists consider Belukha sacred. According to legends, the land of the gods Shambhala was once located here, from which the great Buddha came to India.

There are also low mountains in Kazakhstan. These include the Kazakh Upland Saryarka in the center of the country, the Mugodzhary stone ridge - the southern spur of the Ural Mountains in the west, and the Mangystau Mountains near the Caspian Sea.

The highest in the Kazakh Upland are Aksorgan, Chingiztau, Ulytau, Karkaralinskie mountains. Also here is the pearl of Saryarka - the Shchuchinsko-Borovsk resort area, which is often called "Kazakhstan's Switzerland".

And in the Mangystau mountains there is the lowest point in Kazakhstan - the Karagiye depression (132 meters below sea level).
