Self-construction of any small vessel, be it a yacht or an ordinary boat, begins with the development of a theoretical drawing. This can be done in different ways depending on the complexity of the project.

Step 1
In the event that you decide to build a small boat, working drawings can be made by hand. If you do not take an already existing boat as a basis, but work from scratch, the first step is to decide on the size of the future floating craft - to choose its length, width and board height.
Step 2
Note that already at this stage you are laying down the basic qualities of the future boat. So, if you plan to make a small cabin on it, the length of the boat should be at least 4.5 meters. If you take a shorter length, there will not be enough space for the cabin or it will be very small and uncomfortable. Based on the necessary stability, the width with a length of 4.5 meters should not be made less than 1.2 meters.
Step 3
The theoretical drawing is built in three planes: side - side view, half-latitude - top view and body - front and back views. In the side view, waterlines are marked, buttocks are vertical sections of the hull, parallel to the diametrical plane, and frames. Note that there are theoretical frames - those that are given in the drawing to indicate the contours, and practical, corresponding to the real frames of the future boat.
Step 4
In the top view, the outer contours of the hull and waterline are marked, in the front and rear view, the sections of the frames, buttocks and waterlines. Taken together, all these drawings allow you to get an idea of the boat's appearance and its main seaworthiness.
Step 5
If the task is to quickly build a simple boat, it makes sense to make it small - for example, 1:10 - a foam model, on which the contours are evaluated and finalized. If the model meets all the requirements, it is cut along the lines of practical frames, after which the dimensions of the resulting sections are increased tenfold, obtaining real practical frames. Note that these will be the outer contours, and when creating working drawings of the frames, they must be reduced by the thickness of the skin.
Step 6
In the event that you plan to create a more complex structure, it makes sense to use special computer programs to build working drawings. Most often, for self-construction, Solid Works, AutoCAD, Compass, Rhinoceros, AutoShip, Dassault CATIA, AutoYacht, Carene are used.
Step 7
Computer programs make it possible not only to create a drawing of a yacht, but also to calculate its main hydrodynamic characteristics. Most of the above programs can be found on the Internet, they can significantly improve the quality of the project being created. Having worked with several of them, you can choose the most suitable for yourself.
Step 8
It should be noted that it takes a long time to master the skills of working with these programs - especially with such a powerful program as Solid Works, which is not a specialized shipbuilding software. If you are building a boat for yourself in a single copy, it makes sense to use the simpler programs from the list.
