The term "demarcation" literally translated means "to delimit, to mark the boundaries." The demarcation process refers to the process of establishing and marking state borders. In this case, we are talking specifically about setting boundaries on the ground, marking by means of special border signs, etc.
The process of forming and defining state borders is carried out in two stages. The first is delimitation, this is a conditional setting of borders, that is, drawing the borders of a state on maps, and the conclusion of treaties on the issue of establishing borders with neighboring states. For delimitation, special large-scale maps are used with detailed drawing of all objects and landscape features, on which the exact boundaries of the state are drawn. The cartographic drawing of the border must be agreed upon by all interested states and confirmed by the relevant international treaties. After the delimitation process is completed and legalized, the process of forming the state borders passes into the stage of demarcation - the definition and designation of the border line on the ground according to the maps formed in the process of delimitation. To carry out border demarcation, a demarcation commission is formed by the Government of the state and neighboring states. The conditions and procedure for its formation are prescribed in international treaties during delimitation. In most cases, a demarcation commission or a number of commissions is formed from representatives of all states interested in establishing the border. All work on the establishment of the border is controlled by the commission and carried out in accordance with its orders. The demarcation commission determines which types of boundary markers are used in a particular area, indicate the places of their installation, determine the procedure for carrying out work on the establishment of boundaries and establish the timing of their implementation. The results of the work performed are also accepted by the members of the commission for compliance. All actions of the commission and the results of the work carried out to establish state boundaries are documented. For documentary registration, maps of the area, protocols of ongoing activities, acts of acceptance of work performed, etc. are used.
