What is a humidor

A humidor is a special gadget that everyone who is a true connoisseur of quality cigars should have.

Humidor

A humidor is a container for storing cigars, which provides them with certain conditions that preserve their original taste and aroma. Most often, a humidor is a relatively small box or box of a square or rectangular shape, but if it comes to storing a large number of cigars, for example, for a smoking club, the humidor can take the form of a cabinet or even a separate room.

The main requirement for the storage conditions of cigars, which manufacturers usually put forward, is to maintain an optimal humidity level in the room where they are stored: it should be at least 65% and not more than 75%. This is significantly higher than the normal humidity in a standard room where people are, which, depending on the season and temperature, can range from 30% to 60%. Therefore, it is the use of a humidor that is a prerequisite for cigars not to lose their original properties for a long time.

Humidor characteristics

The most common material for making humidors is wood, as it is an environmentally friendly material that allows cigars to "breathe" and prevents mold from forming. However, manufacturers today offer fixtures made from other types of materials, such as metal or plastic. In this case, an obligatory part of this device, in addition to the body itself, is the so-called humidifier, which serves as a tool for achieving and maintaining the desired humidity level.

The design of a humidifier can be very different, from the primitive, which is a sponge moistened with a liquid that gradually evaporates moisture, to complex electronic devices that spray moisture into the air inside the humidor when the humidity reaches a critically low level. At the same time, a humidor equipped with such a device most often also has a built-in sensor that monitors the change in humidity level.

Small humidors usually have one compartment for storing one type of cigar. Larger devices can be designed to store several varieties at the same time: in this case, they usually have separate cavities, in each of which a different variety is stored so that their aromas do not mix with each other.
