A foreign passport is the main document proving the identity of a citizen of the Russian Federation when leaving his country. At the same time, the established period of validity of the passport differs, depending on its type.
The validity period of a foreign passport is established by Federal Law No. 114-FZ of August 15, 1996 "On the procedure for leaving the Russian Federation and entering the Russian Federation."
Terms of validity of a foreign passport
The period of time during which a foreign passport is valid is established by Article 10 of the specified regulatory legal act. He, in turn, determines that these terms will be different for two different types of documents that are currently issued to citizens when applying for a passport.
So, the first of them is an ordinary foreign passport, which is often referred to as an old-style passport. It contains only paper pages that contain basic information about its owner. The validity period of such a passport, according to the law, is 5 years from the date of issue.
Another type of document that a citizen of the Russian Federation can receive today is a foreign passport containing an electronic data carrier. It is a plastic module that replaces the last page of the passport. Such a module contains the same information as a regular passport printed on it, as well as information about the owner, encrypted in a machine-readable form. This type of document is also called a new type of passport, and its validity period is 10 years from the date of issue.
Passport validity check
To find out how long your passport will still remain valid, regardless of its type, the document should be opened on the page with a photo. After that, pay attention to the bottom of the page. In both types of passports, there will be two dates side by side: the first is the date of issue of the document, the second is the date of the end of its validity period. Accordingly, depending on the type of document that you own, the difference between the date of issue and the expiration date for a new passport will be 10 years, for an old passport - 5 years.
Both of these dates are signed in Russian and English. So, the date you need is named in Russian "Expiration date", in English - Date of expiry. This figure can be very important when planning foreign travel: for example, some countries require that your foreign passport remains valid for a certain period after the end of the trip. Such a requirement is made, for example, by India: when issuing a visa, consular staff check that the document is valid for six months after the trip.
