Making a quality translation is not easy, especially when it comes to translating into an ancient dead language such as Latin. However, students and specialists of various specialties, for example, doctors, philologists, lawyers, face a similar task. So how do you translate a text from Russian into Latin?
It is necessary
- - Russian-Latin dictionary;
- - grammar reference book on the Latin language.
Instructions
Step 1
Decide which historical period you want to translate the text into. Classical Latin is quite different in its syntax and in places in vocabulary from medieval Latin. This will determine which grammar reference you need to use.
Step 2
Find the literature you need for your translation. The Russian-Latin dictionary can be purchased at a bookstore, borrowed from a library, or downloaded from the Internet. If you need to make a special translation, choose a thematic dictionary, for example, medical or legal. Also find a suitable grammar reference. One of the best textbooks on the Latin language remains the "Grammar of the Latin Language", compiled by Sobolevsky. It includes both grammar and syntax of classical Latin.
Step 3
Start translating the text. First, find out the Latin translation of individual Russian words. Then stand out from them the correct sentence in Latin. Consider the difference in Latin and Russian syntax. For example, a verb is usually placed at the end of a sentence. And also some elements of complex sentences, connected by the main sentence by the unions “what” and “to”, in Latin are transmitted by impersonal phrases accusativus cum infinitivo (accusative case with an indefinite verb) or nominativus cum infinotivo (nominative case with an indefinite verb).
Step 4
In the translated text, check the agreement of words with each other. Do not forget that in Latin not only nouns are inclined, but also adjectives. And the adjective must be in the same gender, number and case as the noun to which the definition refers.
Step 5
Thus, translate all the text. Next, check if the verbs are in the correct tenses. Please note that there are more tenses in Latin than in Russian, and that, for example, if the story is in the past tense, and we are talking about an action performed before that, a special time is used - plusquamperfectum.
