The most difficult moment when growing a rose in central Russia is rightly wintering. The homeland of this beauty is located much to the south, and only the success of breeders, coupled with the diligence of amateur gardeners, allow you to enjoy the beauty of the queen of flowers. Thorough preparation for the winter cold includes correct and timely fertilization, sheltering roses for the winter and pruning them.

Instructions
Step 1
Use a wooden spatula or garden trowel to strip the neck of the rose bush off the ground. Peel the bases of large stems.
Step 2
Remove any wild shoots below the graft site. They can be recognized by their pale color and a large number of thorns. In addition, wild birds usually have seven small matte leaves, and varietal roses have five large and shiny ones. Wild shoots draw strength from the rose, and after a harsh winter, the scion may not wake up. Trim the wilds close to the stem, grabbing some bark. Cover the cut with garden pitch.
Step 3
Cut out all dead and old shoots to the bottom. Clean the damaged areas of the stems to healthy tissue. Healthy white or light green rose wood. If the stem is brown at the cut, trim the shoot even shorter.
Step 4
Cut all shoots with unripe wood completely. To determine the maturity of the shoot, try breaking off one of the thorns. If the shoot is immature, then the thorns are crumpled or come off with a piece of bark.
Step 5
Select the largest, mature, so-called skeletal, shoots and remove any thickening branches. Also remove any broken branches, leaves and buds. You should have a bush with mature, healthy branches and dormant buds. Now trim the stems according to the type of roses.
Step 6
Hybrid tea roses bloom on young shoots, so cut them about 15-20 cm high in winter.
Step 7
Floribunda roses form powerful bushes, so they need different pruning heights. But don't cut this type of rose too short. Cut some shoots higher, others lower. The bush will look more lush next year.
Step 8
Miniature and polyanthus roses also bloom on the shoots of the current year, so strong pruning can be recommended for them, as well as hybrid tea. The exception is the seedlings of the first year - for them, pruning must be made easy.
Step 9
In ramblers, cut out the small side shoots completely, leaving the central strong stems uncut.
Step 10
Prune the branches of standard roses at a distance of 15-20 cm from the trunk.
Step 11
If the plants are located in highly ventilated places, cut all the stems to a height of 30-40 cm.
Step 12
Cut the stems of the roses 1 cm from the outward bud. The cut should be oblique so that the water flowing down does not stagnate at the cut.
Step 13
After pruning, add soil to the base of the bush and mulch. Leaving the rootstock open will cause increased growth of wild birds.
