A stove made of steel or cast iron can be self-made and installed in the garage. If you decide to use sheet metal, then its thickness should not be less than 5 mm. The oven itself will need to be installed on a protective base, covering the walls next to the installation.

Steel furnace
You can make a potbelly stove yourself from a steel flask, iron, a metal pipe, corners and a lattice. The flask can be laid on its side, then there is no need to mount the door separately, the container lid will play its role. At the bottom of the lid, a slot is to be drilled, the width of which should be 1 cm, the slot will be necessary for the entry of air masses into the firebox.
The stove will gain stability if you attach the legs to the flask. They can be made from a corner. From it you need to cut 4 elements that can be connected to the container with bolts; welding will allow you to replace such fasteners.
A metal grate should be installed inside the stove, welded to the walls of the furnace. After that, you can proceed to the arrangement of the pipe. To do this, you need to equip a hole in the container, the diameter of which will be slightly larger than the diameter of the prepared pipe. The chimney must be inserted into the hole, filling up the cracks with refractory clay.
You can make a cast iron stove, on the walls of which you have to equip a coating. This process is called lining, and clay concrete can be used for its implementation. Such a solution will contribute to a slower heating of the furnace, however, the device will retain heat for a longer time, and the cast-iron body will be protected from quick burning out.
Among the positive characteristics of such furnaces, one can single out the absence of the need to obtain permission for its installation, and during operation, the furnace will not need special maintenance.
Furnace installation
Do not forget about fire safety in the garage. The stove should be installed on a "pie", which has the first layer in the form of an asbestos-cement sheet, the second layer will be a sheet of galvanized steel, on which it is necessary to lay the supports made of silicate bricks. But the stove will have to be installed on the products themselves.
The walls also need to be protected, for which you need to equip the first layer in the form of paronite. This material has excellent insulating qualities, it contains asbestos-rubber mass and is able to withstand a temperature limit of 450 ° C. This is followed by a sheet of galvanized steel. It is necessary to provide a distance of 80 cm from the stove to the wall.
