For many garden plants, temperature drops, excessive humidity, frosty winds are a real challenge. Therefore, a shelter for the winter remains the only guarantee of protecting the plantings from freezing.
Necessary
- - peat, sawdust, shavings;
- - waterproof material;
- - twine.
Instructions
Step 1
Help the plants go dormant. To do this, from the middle of summer, stop feeding them nitrogen fertilizers that stimulate growth. Use a feed containing phosphorus and potassium.
Step 2
Whitewash the bark of fruit and ornamental trees in autumn. Thus, protect it from burns and frostbites. In addition, protect your planting from rodents by wrapping the trunks with matting or non-woven material.
Step 3
After the onset of cold weather, perennial herbaceous plants, cover the roots of young trees with peat, sawdust, wood chips, shavings, dry leaves. Try to avoid mulching with straw, as rodents can settle in it.
Step 4
For winter shelter of roses, frost-resistant grape varieties, climates, etc. you can use the ground. Start preparing in early autumn. Cut off the ends of the shoots. This must be done to ripen their bark. With the establishment of cold weather, cover the bushes with soil to a height of 40 cm.
Step 5
Alternatively, use an air-dry method as protection for heat-loving plants. Put small blocks between the plants, put a flooring of boards on them, add a layer of sawdust, dry leaves, etc. Finally, spread the waterproof material. Be sure to provide an outlet to prevent the plants from suffocating.
Step 6
To protect ornamental shrubs from freezing, such as varietal mock orange, actinidia, honeysuckle, etc., bend their shoots to the ground and cover them with snow. Spreading bushes, for example, tree peony, boxwood, etc., first tie with twine, then wrap with burlap and only then cover with spruce branches. Please note that for brittle plants (young Christmas trees, rhododendrons and others), it is better to make a special frame, which is then wrapped in burlap and covered with spruce branches.
Step 7
To create canopies over plants in winters with little snow, use materials impermeable to moisture and air: linoleum, roofing felt, plastic wrap and others. And the snow that has fallen on the platforms, aisles, paths, collect and additionally insulate them with stone hills, planting of perennials, tree trunks and shrubs.
