Small jars of rosin are available at many hardware stores. Looking at them, you may have wondered what this substance is intended for. It has many uses in various fields.

What is rosin for?

Rosin is divided into two types: natural and artificial. The first is obtained from wood resin (usually pine), the second from cellulose. Natural rosin is considered to be of higher quality. But it should be borne in mind that neither resin nor cellulose can be used directly as rosin - it must first be subjected to special treatment. This substance has long been used as a flux for soldering. Rosin can be used for this purpose both in pure form and as part of other, more complex fluxes, for example, an alcohol solution or a special composition of LTI. Both pure rosin and most fluxes based on it have an important property - pH neutrality. This means that they, unlike acidic fluxes, do not spoil the processing site over time and create almost no leakage current. Soldering of electrical circuits and electronic circuits can only be carried out with neutral fluxes. Musicians playing string instruments rub the bows with rosin. However, it is pointless to use it in conjunction with instruments that do not require the use of bows. The recommendation to lubricate the pick with rosin, sometimes expressed in the forums of guitarists, has no basis at all. In ballet, this substance is used to improve the adhesion of shoes to the floor, and in sports - the hands of an athlete with a barbell, kettlebells or dumbbells. In addition, rosin is used in the production of artificial materials as both a main and an auxiliary component. It is found in many flexible and hard polymers and even in some detergents. In the past, it was used to eliminate slippage in belt drives - but now it is no longer done, since many devices have been invented to automatically maintain the optimal tension. It should be remembered that when small particles of rosin are in the air, it is unacceptable to use an open flame.
