Step 1
Find a well-visible disk of the Earth's satellite in the sky. The moon is close enough to the surface of the Earth, so you can even observe it with the naked eye in good weather. It is believed that the best viewing conditions are created in the early evening with a waxing moon or in the morning with a waning moon. And without special optics on the Earth's satellite, you can see the lunar seas and some craters that make up the general outlines of the lunar surface.
Step 2
For a more detailed study of the elements of the relief of the moon, use binoculars or a telescope with a small magnification. You will be able to see the largest craters, mountain ranges and flat areas on the lunar surface. A telescope with a 200 mm objective lens will make it possible to examine individual details of relatively large mountain ranges, many folds and grooves. Chains of small craters look especially beautiful in the lunar landscape.
Step 3
Use polarizing and ND filters when observing through a telescope. The moon is a fairly bright celestial object and can dazzle you when viewed directly with a strong telescope. Filters help to reduce the brightness of the glow and make the observation of the moon more convenient. Keep in mind that the amount of light emanating from a satellite depends on the phase of the moon. The variable density filter makes it possible to smooth out the contrast between bright and dark elements of the Earth's surface.
Step 4
Don't wait until the full moon to start observing. The fact is that this phase is not very suitable for these purposes, since at the time of the full moon the contrast of the details of the moon will be minimal, which makes it difficult to study it. The most favorable period for research is the period after the end of the new moon until the onset of the first quarter.
Step 5
To maximize your observations, keep a map or atlas of the lunar surface handy. There are quite powerful and very functional computer programs from which you can get all the necessary information about the location of lunar objects and prepare in advance for their observation.
