A faceted glass is a real symbol of the Soviet Union. There are several stories of the emergence of a faceted glass, most of them claim that the author of the idea was the famous Vera Mukhina, the author of the sculpture "Worker and Collective Farm Woman".

Instructions

Step 1

The authorship of Vera Mukhina was not documented, however, many colleagues and relatives claimed that Mukhina was actively engaged in glass in her free time from creating sculptures, and she repeatedly collaborated with glass factories. They say, if you try, in some collections you can find a beer mug created by Mukhina.

Step 2

The second legend claims that the faceted glass was developed by the famous Soviet engineer and professor of geology Nikolai Slavyanov, who did a lot for the development of metallurgy in the USSR. Slavyanov made several sketches of such a glass - with ten, twenty and thirty sides. He suggested making such glasses out of metal. The actual sketches of faceted glasses in different versions can be found in his diaries. Some researchers believe that Mukhina, who was familiar with Slavyanov, saw these sketches and proposed to produce faceted glasses from glass.

Step 3

The first faceted glass was produced at the famous glass factory in Gus-Khrustalny in 1943. The shape of the glass was actually imperative. Even before the war, Soviet engineers invented a dishwasher that could replace a person, but only when using dishes of a certain shape and size. This is what explains such an interesting shape of the glass.

Step 4

It should be noted that the faceted glasses were very durable due to the rather impressive thickness of the glass and the peculiarities of the manufacturing technology. Raw materials for it were prepared at a temperature of 1500-1600 degrees, after which the glasses were fired twice more, and then faceted using a special technology. Certain batches of faceted glasses were made with the addition of lead, which is actively used in the manufacture of crystal.

Step 5

Initially, the glass had only 16 faces, there were experimental specimens that had 17 faces, but more often you can find options with 12, 14, 18 faces, since it is easier to make glasses with an even number of faces. A standard beaker held 250 ml of liquid. At the bottom of the glasses, the price was squeezed out (usually 7 or 14 kopecks).

Step 6

Due to its shape, a faceted glass has a number of advantages over conventional glass. The edges make such glasses much easier, for example, in most cases, when dropped from a height of a meter, even on a hard floor, faceted glasses remain intact. It should be noted that faceted glasses are still actively produced for use in passenger trains and catering establishments.
