What is a directory? You can argue for a long time about which syllable to put the stress in this word. But it is much more interesting to get acquainted with its meanings - and there are several of them.

Step 1
Initially, a catalog was called an ordinary card index, like the one found in any library loan or reading room. In the cabinets that make up such a catalog, there are boxes in which the cards strung on the core are located. They are listed alphabetically. Any of them can be removed, or you can add a new one. To perform any of these operations, it is sufficient to temporarily remove the rod and then reinstall it in place.

Then this term acquired another meaning: a book, a magazine, a notebook with a list of something. The catalog differs from the reference book in that it contains only general information about enumeration objects, but does not provide detailed parameters for each of them. There are catalogs of books from one or another publishing house, and in every post office there are catalogs of periodicals. Using them, you can find out the index of the publication to which you wish to subscribe, if you do not know it. And advertising catalogs of goods are handed out to shop visitors for free - but if any of them are kept and allowed to lie for at least twenty years, it will turn into a good second-hand book product.

In computing, a directory in the past was often referred to as what we are accustomed to call a folder today. Another name for it is directory. Users who have been familiar with computers since DOS often say so today. Each directory can contain both files and other directories called subdirectories. And the sign that separates them depends on the OS: in Linux - a forward slash (slash), in DOS and Windows - a forward slash (backslash). Interestingly, initially in some early operating systems, a slash separated the file name from the extension - today a period is used everywhere for this.

As for the pronunciation of this term, any disputes in this regard are meaningless. The rules are allowed to make both the second and the third syllable in it.
