There are different types of paints and varnishes. To choose a varnish coating, you need to know for what purpose the material is selected, the recommended area of its application, advantages and disadvantages.
Ship varnish, it is also yacht
Ship varnish is the most durable and moisture resistant coating for wooden surfaces. It contains polyurethane and alkyd-urethane resins, which provide a high-gloss varnishing effect. Ship varnishes provide deep impregnation of wood, protect it from ultraviolet rays, temperature changes, and most importantly, they are resistant to prolonged contact with water, including sea water. The effect of ship varnish lasts up to 7 years.
The initial area of application of ship varnish was for covering the decks of ships and yachts. Now ship varnish is widely used in everyday life - for varnishing wooden surfaces inside and outside the building, as well as in rooms with high humidity. Ideal for covering gazebos, verandas, outdoor wooden decking.
Parquet varnish
Parquet lacquer is used to cover a parquet board or parquet flooring. According to the chemical composition, parquet varnishes are of three types: water based, based on oil resins and acid-hardened, which are made on the basis of formaldehyde resins.
The base of water-based parquet lacquer is water. This material does not contain solvents, so it is considered environmentally friendly and less toxic. It is odorless and non-flammable, and is often used in rooms with a high risk of fire. The disadvantage of water-based parquet varnish is low wear resistance, it is subject to the influence of temperature changes. The varnishing works are carried out in a dry room at room temperature.
Alkyd parquet varnish is made on the basis of oil resins. Does not have an adhesive property, the main purpose of alkyd varnishes is to enhance the color of the wood. If it is necessary to preserve the original color of the parquet, alkyd varnish will cope with this. The disadvantage of this group of varnishes is their increased sensitivity to drying conditions. Oxygen is needed to cure alkyd varnish, so a constant flow of fresh air is needed to the painted surface until it dries.
The most durable parquet varnishes are acid cure varnishes. They have high wear resistance and are used in premises where an increased load on the floor is expected (government offices, shops, halls, hotels, etc.). Such parquet varnishes are not sensitive to changes in air humidity in the room. However, when working with them, it is necessary to use respirators and ventilate the room for 2-3 days, after which the pungent smell of the solvent disappears.
Ship and parquet varnish - the main differences
The main distinguishing feature of parquet varnish from ship varnish is that it protects wood from mechanical stress - damage and impact. In this case, the parquet lacquer glues the floorboards together. The main purpose of ship varnishes is for use in rooms where moisture resistance and resistance to environmental influences are important. Therefore, yacht varnish is widely used by builders in the decoration of external wooden surfaces. Of course, ship varnish is several times more expensive than parquet. But both the quality of the coating and its service life are higher.
