Every ice fishing lover has faced a problem when the ice ax, instead of breaking the ice, stupidly jumps in place. And you don't always have a few new knives or sharpeners on hand. Ice ax knives can also be sharpened at home.
Instructions
Step 1
At the first stage, you must understand why the drill may not break through the ice.
* Too "steep" sharpening, from which the drill gets stuck in the ice.
* Dull cutting edge from poor quality sharpening.
* A common mistake is a semicircular sharpening, from which the drill rolls along an arc.
* The "heel" of the ice ax is below the cutting edge.
Step 2
When you have identified the problem, get to work. For high-quality sharpening, you need a clamp that will hold the desired angle of the blade and will be able to walk left - right. If there is no clamp, it will be difficult, since you will rely on an accurate eye and coordination of movements. But experience will come with time.
Step 3
Place the knife with a bevel to the emery with the edge up, and, carefully, we sharpen without changing the factory angle. After that, turn on the emery, put the knife in position with the edge up and lead it from one end to the other. It is important to keep the original angle. Most likely, one knife wire will not be enough, so make several wires. Cut both knives, even if one of them has not been blunt.
Step 4
Finally, sand the blade on a grinding wheel. True, some experts argue that this is not a necessary procedure at all. Ice ax knives serve the fisherman perfectly even without grinding until they again fall on a solid foreign body.
