It is believed that the sound of the surf can be heard in the shell if you bring it to your ear. And the more ornate the shape of the shell, the louder and stronger the waves will rage. However, this is another delusion. It is not the sound of the sea that is heard in the shell.

Why is the sound of the sea heard in seashells?
Why is the sound of the sea heard in seashells?

There are several hypotheses for the occurrence of "sea noise" in shells. One of them says that a person hears the sounds of blood circulation through the vessels of the head. However, this theory is incorrect, and it is easy to prove it. It is known that after intense exertion, the blood begins to move at a higher speed, therefore, the sound must also change. However, if you bring the shell to your ear, you will hear the same “sound of the sea”.

The following theory can be formulated as follows: shells make noise due to the movement of air currents through them. This explains why the sounds seem louder when you bring the shell close to your ear, and quieter when you hold it at a distance. However, this hypothesis was refuted by scientists. In a soundproof room, despite the fact that there is air in it, the shell "sea sounds" does not emit.

In fact, the “sound of the sea” in the shell is nothing more than slightly altered sounds of the environment reflected from the shell walls. You can take any empty vessel, put it to your ear and it will “make noise” no worse than a seashell. This is because any closed air cavity acts as a kind of resonator, where different acoustic waves are concentrated. That is why the shape and size of the shells directly affects the published "sea song". The more curved and larger they are, the richer the “surf sound” is.

It turns out that in order to hear the "sea" and refresh the memories of a wonderful summer vacation, it is not at all necessary to have a shell at hand. This can be done with the help of improvised items, the same glass. A similar effect will be observed if you fold your palms in a boat and bring them close to your ear. And the more different sounds around, the stronger the splash of waves will be heard. But with a shell, undoubtedly, indulging in memories is more interesting, especially if it was brought from the beach where you rested.
