Instructions

Step 1

The paper international standard ISO 216, which was adopted by the German manufacturing standards committee at the beginning of the 20th century, was based on the metric principle.

Step 2

Engineering and mathematics specialist Walter Portsmann suggested taking a 1 m² sheet as a basis and calling it A0. All A-size sheets have the same aspect ratio equal to one to the square root of two.

Step 3

If sheet A0 is folded in half, then you get the desired paper size, which is called A1.

Step 4

To fold A1 to A4, fold the Whatman paper in half and cut along the fold line. You will receive sheet A2, which is 420 × 594 mm.

Step 5

Fold this sheet in half and do the same. You now have an A3 (297 × 420 mm) on hand. A sheet of this size is often used by students for various drawings. If you repeat the previous step, you will get the A4 format you need with a size of 210 × 297 mm. This is the most common standard in Russia used for various documents and printing. It turns out that the A1 format contains 8 A4 sheets.

Step 6

If you continue to fold each subsequent sheet in half in the same way, you will get the smallest possible format at number 10 (A10), measuring 26 × 37 mm.

Step 7

In addition to the North American standard (considered official in the United States of America and the Philippines) and international, there is the Japanese paper format system.

Step 8

During the Renaissance, the concept of the "golden section" appeared, which was used by painters and other artists. And until the 20th century, the ratio of the sides of the paper was 1: 1, 618. But this standard could not take root in the printing industry, since when the sheet was folded in half, the format of the book became inconvenient for the reader to perceive information.
