On Vosstaniya Square, at the intersection of Ligovsky and Nevsky avenues in St. Petersburg, there is a building of the Moscow (Nikolaevsky) railway station, which is considered the central one in the city. The authors of the project are architects K. A. Ton and K. A. Zhelyazevich - the architects of Emperor Nicholas I.
Station history
The most interesting feature of the Moscow railway station is that it has a “close relative”. His "twin brother" is called the Leningradsky railway station, and he "lives" in the city of Moscow, receiving and seeing off trains going to the Northern capital.
The date of construction of the Moscow railway station is considered to be 1851. Since that time, it has been repeatedly reconstructed and restored, combining the pomp of 19th century architecture with the latest technologies of the 21st century.
The first head of the then Nikolayevsky railway station was the father of the future Russian traveler Nikolai Ilyich Miklukho-Maclay. His apartment was located right in the building of the station itself. There was also the railway administration, the imperial premises, offices and apartments for the station employees.
Intercity directions
Every day, the main station of St. Petersburg serves about 40 rolling stock, which move in the eastern and southern directions. In addition to the branded trains "Sapsan", "Aurora" and "Nevsky Express" going to Moscow, this railway station sends passengers to Voronezh, Adler, Simferopol, Kharkov, Belgorod, Samara, Evpatoria. Four modern platforms equipped with automatic turnstiles are designed for boarding and disembarking passengers traveling to the suburbs of St. Petersburg. Trains equipped with luxury carriages depart from one of the platforms. From the Moscow railway station you can get to Chudov, Veliky Novgorod, Volkhovstroy, Tosno, Shapki, the village of Budogoshch.
Station structure
The main place in the station building is occupied by the Central Hall, which is surrounded by many restaurants, cafes, shops, bistros, souvenir and pharmacy stalls. It is adjoined by a ticket office and a waiting room with a VIP area. There is also a first-aid post, storage rooms, rest rooms, a police station and a mother and child room. The monument to Peter the Great, located right in the Central Hall of the Moscow Railway Station, is considered a decoration and a traditional meeting place.
