In summer, this phenomenon can be observed not only in aquariums, but also in small ponds of the park area and even on the banks of rivers. Water turns from transparent to cloudy green, and soon completely acquires a bright green color, resembling a large puddle of radioactive paint. What is the reason for water bloom and how to deal with this phenomenon in your own garden?
Blooming water in stagnant reservoirs is nothing more than an intensive reproduction of the simplest algae. They are also present in ordinary water, only in smaller quantities. But if the conditions for breeding are favorable: a large amount of sunlight, nutrients and a sufficiently high temperature, harmless babies begin to reproduce, filling all the free space. Any pond very quickly loses its aesthetic qualities, and if you keep fish or ornamental plants, such flowering can easily cause disease or mass death of your pets.
Single- and multicellular algae, like ordinary algae, feed on photosynthesis, so it is not surprising that their number in water bodies noticeably increases from the abundance of sunlight. To avoid blooming in stagnant water in a pond, barrel, or aquarium, shade them from direct sunlight. In reservoirs, you can plant more bottom algae with long stems, which will create additional shading and provide the simplest with natural competition. A barrel or a small summer cottage pond can be covered with boards or special screens during intense heat and scorching heat. It is best to initially place such objects where there is little shading.
The bloom of water directly depends not only on its temperature, but also on its composition. Like any algae, the culprits of turbidity actively fix nitrogen from the water, gaining fat from it by the day, but by the hour. Therefore, if you notice that water suddenly begins to bloom in a pond with fish for no apparent reason, you need to check for the presence of nitrates. You may be feeding your fish too intensively and the residues of feed and excrement are above neutral values. Also, one of the reasons for the sharp blooming of water can be the washout of nitrates from the nearest lawn. Try to apply fertilizer carefully, especially if there is a body of water nearby.
Today, there are special preparations that purify water from the simplest algae, but they must be used with special care, since they can also affect other participants in the biocenosis of your reservoir. First of all, try to solve the problem on your own by replacing part of the water, arranging shading and cleaning the bottom from dirt and organic debris. Remember that a body of water is a natural biosystem that is able to independently regulate internal balance. Give time, most likely, everything will return to normal soon.
