On July 12, 2012, on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. The dialogue between the two leaders has been the most productive in the past year and a half. The meeting resulted in the signing of more than a dozen bilateral documents.
The presidents of the Russian Federation and Ukraine met in Yalta, where a meeting of the interstate commission was held. Vladimir Putin and Viktor Yanukovych discussed the delimitation of maritime spaces in the Black and Azov seas, signed a declaration on the Russian-Ukrainian strategic partnership, a memorandum on the procedure for using atomic energy for peaceful purposes. On the basis of the signed declaration, joint holdings will be created in the field of power engineering and the nuclear fuel cycle.
The parties also discussed problems in the supply and payment of gas. This issue has been the most acute in recent years. The result was an agreement to intensify the search for compromises.
As a result of the meeting, Putin and Yanukovych were able to come to an agreement and signed an agreement on the delimitation of the sea border in the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov. The island of Toulouse, which was a stumbling block, went to Ukraine, like other disputed territories. The Russian Federation received the right at any time to use the Kerch Strait for the passage of its ships. According to political scientists, this is a compromise solution for both sides.
When revising gas relations, the President of the Russian Federation noted that the Russian side sees no reason to change the previously signed agreement on the price of blue fuel. But at the same time, Ukraine's accession to the Customs Union will reduce the price for Ukraine. Yanukovych is not yet ready to enter the vehicle. The final decision will be made after the President of Ukraine is convinced of the effectiveness of this association.
The most important thing at the meeting was the signing of a declaration on strategic partnership between Russia and Ukraine. The main points of the basic document were: deepening strategic partnership, bilateral support for socio-economic reforms, strengthening friendship and developing cooperation between the two peoples, modernizing the economy. The main areas of cooperation will be focused on the development of political, economic, nature conservation, cultural, humanitarian, scientific and technical activities of both countries.
