Saber: Power and Effectiveness in Combat

The saber is a bladed weapon of chopping, stabbing and cutting action. The blade of this weapon has a significant bend towards the blunt part. The length of the working part of the saber is about a meter. Various variants of such weapons were very widespread in Asia and Eastern Europe even more than a thousand years ago. The saber served as the main weapon of the cavalry, although it was also used in the infantry.

The improved combat properties of the saber allowed it to supplant swords and other types of similar weapons almost everywhere.

The traditional saber consists of a sharp blade, a hilt called a hilt, and a protective sheath. The curved blade on the curved side has a blade and ends with a point. Typically, the center of gravity is separated from the hilt, which, combined with the curvature of the blade, gives the weapon more force upon impact. The saber blade was made of extra hard steels with high elasticity.

The saber, perhaps, can be considered the most advanced type of weapon that has a blade. It is lightweight and comfortable, which provided the ability to quickly maneuver in combat conditions. Describing a wide arc, the saber blade struck the enemy with its upper part or point. Sabers of the Turkish and Iranian type, which had a very strong bend, were distinguished by the maximum penetrating effect.

The difference between checkers and sabers

Checker, which in translation from the Circassian language means "long knife", also refers to melee weapons of chopping and stabbing action. But her blade is almost not bent. In length, the checker was somewhat inferior to the saber, and in weight it was lighter. Ephesus drafts, as a rule, included only a handle with a bent and bifurcated head. An essential feature of this type of weapon is the absence of a cross (guard) separating the blade from the handle.

The so-called dragoon saber had a bow that protected the wrist.

There were two types of checkers in Russia. The Caucasian had a blade that was sheathed to the very head. The Cossack saber sat in a scabbard only up to the hilt. The shape of the blade could be different. Among the peoples inhabiting the Caucasus, checkers usually differed in appearance. The way of wearing checkers was also peculiar. It was worn on a shoulder harness with the blade back.

A checker is a weapon designed for a fleeting and impetuous battle. Usually she made a single blow, preempting the attack of the enemy. The small curvature of the blade made it possible to inflict with a saber not only cutting and chopping blows, but also pricks. It was convenient for her to strike from the saddle. Such a perfect weapon was a formidable and compelling argument if it was in experienced hands.
