Step 1
If you have a watch, wait until 1 pm: during this time, objects cast their shortest shadow, directed strictly to the north. It's easy to see the shadow on a sunny day, but in cloudy weather, put a knife on your nail - in any case, a small shadow will appear that will help you find the sun
Step 2
To locate the south in the early morning, look at where the sun has risen. Stand facing the sunrise, with the south on the right. Using this method, keep in mind that in summer the sunrise will be in the northeast, that is, the south will be slightly behind the right, and in the winter it will be in the southeast, while the south will be slightly ahead of the right.
Step 3
Likewise, determine the location of the south in the evening, at sunset. Stand facing the setting sun, the south will be on the left (in the summer - a little ahead, and in the winter - a little behind).
Step 4
If you have a mechanical watch, point the hour hand toward the sun. Then divide the angle formed between the number 1 on the dial and the hour hand in half. The bisector of this angle will point south. Please note that you should always divide an acute angle.
Step 5
At night, try to determine the position of the cardinal points from the North Star. To do this, find the constellation Ursa Major and draw an imaginary line through the two extreme right stars. To continue, set aside the distance between these stars five times. It is here that the North Star is located, stand with your back to it - in front of you is the south.
Step 6
If you need to determine the position of the south on a full moon, face the moon - the south will be behind you. The moon in the first quarter (the crescent points are directed to the left) will be located exactly in the south at 20 o'clock, in the last quarter it will point south at 8 am.
Step 7
In early spring, look at which side the snow melts faster. If you see that on one side of the ravine the snow has already melted, one of the sides of a stone or tree has been freed - feel free to conclude that the south is located on this side. At the same time, keep in mind that the sun must have access to the selected object.
