How to proceed in this case if you do not have a compass? First of all, do not despair and try to get out of the situation using absolutely simple, but no less ingenious ways.

The first thing that comes to mind is to ask the neighbors. If you live in an apartment building, then it is quite possible that your neighbors, who have been living here for a longer time, know where the south is here and where the north is and will be happy to tell you about it.

If you want to determine the sides of the world, being in your apartment, on your own, then just observe where and how the sun rises every morning. From any window on any side, this can be determined at least approximately. Accordingly, if you have the south in front of your eyes, then on the right hand there will be west, on the left - sunrise, and behind - north. However, this is a slightly inaccurate calculation, because the sun is in constant motion. What if you need accurate information?

If a worldwide network is available at your service, then you can determine the sides of the world using the Internet. To do this, find a map of your own city, where you need to enter your address. After receiving a printout with your own house, which always shows the sides of the world, looking out the window, you can navigate very easily.

Another way is with a conventional mechanical watch with hands. This method works only if the day is sunny enough. So, aim the hour hand directly at the sun, and divide the angle between that hand and the number 1 if it's winter, and 2 if it's summer. This bisector will point directly south.

If you urgently need to determine which side of the world is at night, then this can be done by looking at the starry sky from the balcony. If you manage to find the North Star, then keep in mind that it shines in the north. Finding this star is not difficult: first you need to find the constellation Ursa Major in the sky. Next, we draw a conditional straight line passing through the two extreme stars of the Big Dipper. On this conventional straight line, five times mark the same distance as the distance between the last two stars. It is there that the North Star will shine. Stand facing her: the east will be on the right, and the west will be on the left.
