The average person reads at a speed of 150 to 300 words per minute. And for those who have mastered the wisdom of speed reading, after three months of intensive classes, 500-750 words per minute is a normal speed. If there is no money for a paid school, and there is more than enough dedication, then the exercises can be done at home.
Necessary
- - a metronome or a special computer program that counts the time
- - hand-made Schulke tables
Instructions
Step 1
Explore the information on speed reading to dispel myths about this miracle technique. Remember speed reading is just a word marketed by a brand. In fact, all practices are aimed at ensuring that your brain assimilates as much information as possible in a short time. This is achieved by training the so-called rational reading, when a person does not speak the text, does not return to what he has read in order to understand the meaning. On the contrary, his eyes are in the center of the line. The eyes do not run along the lines, but go down from top to bottom. This is the so-called vertical reading. With speed reading, the angle of view expands, the speed of information processing increases. To feel the result in a month, you will have to practice for two hours every day.
Step 2
Train yourself to think that all texts are different and require different reading speed and different concentration of attention. The speed reading technique was developed for people who deal with scientific literature: dissertations, instructions, multi-page analytical reports. Therefore, you should not dive deeply into an easy, entertaining article. For such texts, a couple of glances are enough.
Step 3
Read the text not mechanically, but according to a special algorithm. For example, newcomers to courses are forced to break it down into logical components: title, author of the text, what source of information is used, thematic originality, facts (when it comes to a report or article), novelty of the material (for dissertations), opinions and criticism. It is helpful to read with a metronome or software that simulates it. The metronome is set at 60 beats per minute.
Step 4
Pay attention to your eyes. Do exercises to develop peripheral vision. For example, look at one point directly in front of you, but try to see what is happening around you. It seems strange, but after a while you will learn how to do it. This will help you get close to vertical reading. But at first, try to keep your gaze in the center of the line and read vertically. It will be difficult at first, but after a while it will become a habit. Better to start with simple texts. Vitamin eye drops and choosing the right glasses will make life easier.
Step 5
Train your brain. Speaking text, jumping from line to line and regression (that is, returning to the read text) is now prohibited. Speed reading technique involves guesswork, when you quickly grasp the essence. Schulte tables are very useful. You can download them on the Internet, but it's better to do it by hand. Draw a five by five square. In each, write numbers or letters in random order. Then, keeping your gaze in the center, try to find other numbers.
