In the computer science course, visual, textual, graphical and other types of information are presented in binary code. It is a "machine language" - a sequence of zeros and ones. The information volume allows you to compare the amount of binary information included in different media. For example, consider how the volumes of text and graphics are calculated.

Instructions

Step 1

To calculate the information volume of the text that makes up the book, determine the initial data. You should know the number of pages in the book, the average number of lines of text on each page, and the number of characters with spaces in each line of text. Let the book contain 150 pages, 40 lines per page, 60 characters per line.

Step 2

Find the number of characters in the book: multiply the data from the first step. 150 pages * 40 lines * 60 characters = 360 thousand characters in the book.

Step 3

Determine the information volume of the book based on the fact that one character weighs one byte. 360 thousand characters * 1 byte = 360 thousand bytes.

Step 4

Change to larger units: 1 KB (kilobytes) = 1024 bytes, 1 MB (megabytes) = 1024 KB. Then 360 thousand bytes / 1024 = 351.56 KB or 351.56 KB / 1024 = 0.34 MB.

Step 5

To find the information volume of the graphic file, also define the initial data. Let a 10x10 cm image be obtained with a scanner. You need to know the resolution of the device - for example, 600 dpi - and the color depth. The last value, also for example, you can take 32 bits.

Step 6

Express the resolution of the scanner in dots per cm. 600 dpi = 600 dpi. 1 inch = 2.54 cm. Then 600/2.54 = 236 dots per cm.

Step 7

Find the size of the image in points. 10 cm = 10 * 236 dots per cm = 2360 dots. Then the size of the picture = 10x10 cm = 2360x2360 dots.

Step 8

Calculate the total number of points that make up the image. 2360 * 2360 = 5569600 pieces.

Step 9

Calculate the information volume of the resulting graphic file. To do this, multiply the color depth by the result of the eighth step. 32 bits * 5569600 pieces = 178227200 bits.

Step 10

Move to larger units: 1 byte = 8 bits, 1 KB (kilobyte) = 1024 bytes, etc. 178227200 bits / 8 = 22278400 bytes, or 22278400 bytes / 1024 = 21756 KB, or 21756 KB / 1024 = 21 MB. Rounding off results in approximate results.
