On April 14, 1912, the largest ship of that time, the Titanic, collided with an iceberg. Its length was 269 meters. 100 years later, the Titanic is still among the ten largest ships ever built by man. The first place is taken by the tanker Knock Nevis.

Step 1
In 1974, Japanese shipbuilders received an order to build the world's largest tanker. The project was completed 5 years later. In 1979, the ship was launched, but the owner, a Greek by birth, was not satisfied with the size. The second reason for the immediate reconstruction was too strong vibration in the stern. The vessel was literally cut in half and ramped up by adding several sections to the middle. As a result, the Knock Nevis, then called Seawise Giant, was 458.45 meters long, 68.86 meters wide. It weighed 81 879 tons and could carry 564 763 tons of cargo. If the ship was fully loaded, then it gave a draft equal to the height of a 9-storey building.
Step 2
In 1981, Knock Nevis began operating regular flights from the Middle East to the United States. During the Iran-Iraq war, the tanker was used as a terminal for transshipment of oil from Iran. On May 14, 1988, the ship was attacked by an Iraqi fighter jet and was seriously damaged. With such a solid size, the thickness of the sides of the tanker was only 3.5 centimeters. There was a major oil spill and the ship was disabled for several years.
Step 3
After 3 years, Seawise Giant was renamed Happy Giant. The owner of the tanker also changed. One Norwegian company paid $ 39 million for the ship and then decided to name the ship Jahre Viking. The tanker has been in operation for 12 years. In 2004, many European countries and the United States passed a law banning the use of single-walled vessels for the transport of oil. Since then, Jahre Viking has practically ceased to be profitable and began to be used as an oil storage facility. The ship received a new name - Knock Nevis.
Step 4
In 2009, Knock Nevis was renamed again. The largest ship is now called Mont. The new owner sends the ship on the last voyage. In India, the ship had to remain in the ship graveyard. After a few months, Mont is cut into pieces and sent to be smelted. The 36-ton anchor, which can be seen at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, still serves as a reminder of the giant ship.
Step 5
The largest passenger ship in the world is the Oasis of the Seas. Its length is 360 meters. The ship's hull weighs about 45 thousand tons. On November 30, 2009, the ship was baptized. A few days later, the Oasis of the Seas embarked on its maiden voyage, a cruise from Fort Lauderdale via St. Thomas to the Bahamas.
Step 6
For the passengers of the liner there is an ice arena, a casino with 450 slot machines and 27 tables, a theater (the capacity of the hall is 1380 people), a night and jazz club, basketball and volleyball courts. A park with real trees was planted at Oasis, a handmade carousel, a water arena, swimming pools and jacuzzis were installed, bars, cafes and restaurants, numerous shops, a spa, a fitness room and a bowling hall were opened.
