Impregnation of logs is done in several ways. The simplest and most affordable is surface treatment. You can do it yourself using a painting tool. The rest of the methods are more laborious and complex.
There are several technologies for impregnating logs: surface, deep in autoclaves (impregnation), deep by the method of "hot-cold baths". These methods can be used to process both new and previously used wood.
What are the logs impregnated with?
To prevent decay of logs and increase their service life, various antiseptic and fire-retardant solutions are used. The most commonly used composition is KDS-A. It is an aqueous solution of antiseptics, fire retardants and various additives. There are three brands of this solution, each of which is certified. All of them can be used for both surface and deep impregnation.
Log impregnation technologies
Whichever method of wood processing is used, it needs preliminary preparation. Before impregnation, the logs are cleaned of dust and dirt, the oily, oiled, previously painted surfaces are rounded to clean wood. If the log is wet, it is dried.
The easiest and most inexpensive way to treat with an antiseptic is surface impregnation. It is done with a roller, brush or spray. This method is often used to protect timber elements in timber frame construction. Developers process the lumber with their own hands, evenly distributing the antiseptic solution over the surface of the wood. The most popular composition for this type of impregnation is Senezh.
The technology of deep impregnation in autoclaves has three modes: accelerated, full saturation and "vacuum-atmosphere". Any of them is a way of filling wood with liquid, which is produced using pressure. These conditions are provided by an autoclave - a sealed container into which logs and other sawn timber are laid. Impregnation takes place under a pressure of 10-12 kgf / cm2.
In an accelerated mode, KDS-A grade 1 is used. The logs are processed for 20-30 minutes. The duration of the process in the full saturation mode is 7-8 hours. In this method, KDS-A grade 2 or 3 is used, which is pumped into the autoclave under low pressure until it is completely filled. Further, with the help of a pump, the pressure is brought to 8 atm. After the allotted time, the antiseptic solution is pumped into a separate container, and the logs are subjected to vacuum treatment for 10-15 minutes. In the "vacuum-atmosphere" mode, KDS-A grade 1 is used. The duration of vacuum treatment is no more than 5 hours.
In the impregnation of logs by the method of hot-cold baths, fire-retardant compositions are mainly used. The solution is poured into two containers (baths), one of which is heated to 80 ° C, the other is left cold. The logs are kept in a hot solution for 7-8 hours. All this time, the required liquid temperature is maintained. After the allotted time, the wood is transferred to a container with a cold solution. She will stay in it for 12-15 hours. After that, the logs are sent to dry.
