Lufthansa is the largest airline in Europe and the fifth in the world, with a large number of people using its services every day. However, sometimes thousands are forced to sit at airports, waiting as flights are canceled due to strikes by the company's on-board conductors.
On August 31, September 4 and 7, dozens of airline workers refused to go to their jobs. The first strike took place only at Frankfurt airport, then Berlin and Munich joined it. The last action, which lasted a whole day, was attended by onboard guides from six German cities: in addition to the first three, Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart also joined them. On average, Lufthansa lost 5-10 million euros for every day of the strike.
The demands of the company's employees do not change - they want a five percent increase in wages. Meanwhile, journalists have already christened the flight attendants' action as "the uprising of those who earn good money." The salary of a novice steward is one and a half thousand euros. A flight attendant with ten years of experience on average earns about three thousand euros, and the maximum salary for a senior flight attendant fluctuates around seven thousand euros.
Also, airline employees are unhappy that Lufthansa is hiring third-party employees for flights. Given the fact that due to the crisis, the airline plans to cut some of its employees, hired workers pose a real threat to full-time flight attendants.
So far, the Lufthansa management is only ready to raise the salaries of its employees by 3.5%. Striking stewards are not satisfied with this, and all parties continue to stand their ground without reaching a consensus. It is possible that in the future there may be more protest actions organized by the trade union.
The strike of the airline workers also affected the Russians. Several flights to Moscow and St. Petersburg were canceled. Russian Post has already warned its customers that due to the temporary suspension of Lufthansa's work, some of the parcels may be delayed for a period of about 5 days.
