In Africa, next to the Sahara Desert, the miraculous shea tree (another name for Butyrospermum Park) grows. Outwardly, it resembles an oak: the same spreading, evergreen and mighty, but only with leathery leaves. It reaches 10-20 meters in height. At the same time, it begins to bloom with fragrant brown flowers at the age of twenty and then actively bears fruit at the age of fifty, maintaining a high yield for more than 100 years.
Why is the shea tree considered an African miracle? Its green unripe fruits turn brown when ripe. They are round, about 4 cm in diameter. From the inside, the fruit itself has a thin layer of creamy pulp, which is surrounded by a large seed rich in healthy fats. Shea butter is extracted from it. It was also used by the queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. This unique product was delivered to her in caravans in earthen jugs from the country of Nubia (this is present-day Sudan). In addition, in Africa, this tree is also called kolo, square, shea or si. It is considered sacred there. When picking fruits, ancient rituals are used: the fat obtained from the very first fruits is used to prepare a special dish, which is served to the participants in the harvest. Further, several chickens are sacrificed, and then the solemn ceremony ends with the drinking of alcoholic beverages. Traditionally, the fruits of the unique tree are collected by women. So, in particular, peeled kernels of these nuts are pounded with wooden mortars to obtain flour, then this mass is boiled down to the state of oil. Nowhere is this product's reputation as an emollient and protective agent more appreciated than in the cosmetic field. Shea butter is recommended for all types of skin care. In addition, it is suitable for the care of the delicate skin areas of babies. The fruits of the tree can be stored for a long time without the use of preservatives, this is their main value.
