It is not easy for a beginner in the world of musical instruments to understand how and how they differ from each other. In order to decide which instrument to play, you need to compare them with each other.
Instructions
Step 1
The bass guitar is traditionally classified as a string-plucked instrument that sounds in the bass range. As a rule, this type of guitar differs from others in its massive body and the presence of only four strings on it (in the classical version), and even an increased neck length. The bass guitar is played with the help of fingers or a pick. Having appeared in the 60s of the last century, the bass guitar quickly displaced the contrabass, which until that time was the lowest-sounding stringed instrument, from the scene.
Step 2
The advantages of a double bass are innumerable, but they all cover the shortcomings in the form of dimensions, and therefore it is difficult to transport it from city to city at concerts. The special position of the instrument during performance also caused significant inconvenience, and the low volume level made it difficult to record. The bass guitar easily bypassed the contrabass in all respects, taking its place by right. If we compare in sound, there are connoisseurs of both one instrument and another, but in terms of convenience, the bass guitar is far ahead.
Step 3
Most often, the bass guitar is confused with the electric guitar, as they are really very similar. For professionals, the main difference is that an electric guitar has a pickup that converts the vibrations given to the strings into electricity, and then into a peculiar sound of a special frequency. There are bass guitars with a pickup, but they can no longer be considered classical. In an electric guitar, a pickup is a must-have device, without which you cannot get sound, and in a bass guitar, its presence is optional. There is a category of electric bass guitars that still differ in their massive body and long neck. The presence of pickups on them is a characteristic feature.
Step 4
The number of strings is also different, on an electric guitar there are usually at least 6 strings. Bass strings are often noticeably thicker than electric strings, and they sound in a lower key. The external differences, which determine the bass guitar in front of the eyes or still electro, include the length of the neck. As a rule, it is noticeable to the naked eye that the neck of a bass guitar is much longer, this is due to the low sound that needs to be obtained.
Step 5
Since the electric guitar is descended from the ordinary guitar, and the bass guitar is a descendant of the double bass, the differences between their sound are obvious, the bass always sounds an octave lower than a regular acoustic or electric guitar. Modern bass guitars can be 5 and 6 strings, but the neck length remains the same, so this is the surest criterion for distinguishing them from other guitars.
