Many peoples have legends about amazing boats that did not need to turn around in narrow channels, since they had neither bow nor stern. There were such boats in Russia. They were made from a whole trunk, most often from linden or aspen. Now such a historic boat can only be made from a few pieces, and instead of traditional wood species, mainly pine is used for this purpose.

It is necessary

  • - a thick log with a length of at least 2 m;
  • - spruce roots;
  • - chisels:
  • - mallet;
  • - band-saw;
  • - goats.

Instructions

Step 1

To make a chisel from one trunk, saw it crosswise into 3 pieces. The two should be the same length, and each is about 1/6 of the center board. In ancient times, people determined the ratio of parts empirically, but basically the front and back parts were from 1/5 to 1/8

Step 2

Divide the middle part lengthwise into 3 parts. These will be the sides and bottom. Convex boards go to the sides, and flat boards to the bottom. Its thickness is 5 cm. The sides must be the same. Unfortunately, nowadays it is very rare to find a log of sufficient size, so boats are made from several logs. But in any case, you should have a flat board and 2 symmetrical sides

Step 3

A long groove runs along the inner side of the side of such a boat. Hollow it out all the way. The thickness of the board, which you get in the end, is 3-5 cm. It should roughly coincide with the thickness of the bottom.

Step 4

From the pieces of log that you cut at the very beginning, make the front and back of the boat. Distant ancestors completely hollowed them out, including the outer part. But the outer pieces can also be sawed off, giving them a pointed shape. Attach the sides and bottom to each other as they will be positioned during assembly. Fit the pointed parts roughly to them. You will make the final fit when you sew the boat.

Step 5

If you adhere to the old technology, which was not so long ago used in the northern regions, sew the boat with spruce roots. Drill small holes at all seams at an equal distance from the edges. They should be at the same distance from each other and positioned so that you end up with a seam that resembles a "goat".

Step 6

Another technology was also used in the old days - boats were sewn with wooden nails. Unfortunately, now you will not find such people. But you can move away from the historical method and connect the parts of your product with ordinary nails or iron staples.

Step 7

Mark the places for the cans. They usually need 2-3. Make indentations of the appropriate size in the places of their attachment to the sides. Banks are best nailed, although the same stapling can be used.

Step 8

Before you set sail, you need to do a few more manipulations with the boat. Dry the boat under a roof, protected from drafts, otherwise the tree will deform.

Step 9

Then tar the boat. This process has two purposes. This will seal the holes that will inevitably form during stitching. And also the resin will protect your product from moisture.

Step 10

Regardless of whether you made a boat from one log or from several, it will turn out to be rather narrow. Therefore, for stability, a balancer is sometimes attached to it. Regular oars with oars will not work in this case, so rowers use short strokes. They can be carved from the same wood. Kayak oars will do as well.
