It takes a hunter, fisherman or hiker on a hike a few minutes to sharpen a hunting knife, only if he has not forgotten the whetstone at home. You just need to follow a few simple rules. Knowledge of sharpening technology will be useful to all users of hunting melee weapons.
Necessary
- - whetstone;
- - finishing belt;
- - polishing paste
Instructions
Step 1
Place the working surface of the whetstone at an angle of 10-15 degrees to the side surface of the blade. This is necessary to achieve a general sharpening angle of 35-45 degrees, which is ideal for hunting knives.
Step 2
Reciprocate only in a direction perpendicular to the cutting edge. In this case, the sharp edge when magnified will resemble a saw, the size of the teeth of which will be directly proportional to the abrasiveness of the whetstone. According to modern terminology, the sharpening is microsized.
Step 3
All movements should be slow, in the direction from the handle of the knife to its edge and back. Alternately go through both edges of the blade with a sharpening motion. In this case, all burrs on the cutting edge are either removed or crushed into smaller ones and redirected towards the plane of symmetry of the blade.
Step 4
If your knife has not been sharpened for a long time or has previously been sharpened poorly, use a stronger pressure of the bar to the blade at the beginning of sharpening. As the sharpening angle approaches the required one, gradually loosen the pressure of the knife on the block. Thus, by the end of the process, the effort should be the smallest.
Step 5
To check the sharpness of the sharpening, run the knife along the skin of your fingers, holding the knife perpendicular to the direction of its movement. If the cutting edge catches the skin, the edge is sharp enough.
Step 6
After sharpening, you can make the blade even sharper by fine-tuning it. It will require a belt, as well as a finishing or polishing paste. When finishing, hold the knife so that the edges of the blade overlap the belt evenly across the entire plane. The finishing belt itself should be tight enough.
Step 7
Begin reciprocating so that the belt is perpendicular to the direction of the knife holding. In this case, the cutting edge should be directed in the direction opposite to the direction of the finishing movements.
