Background of the scandal
Monica Samill Lewinsky has been an intern at the White House since 1995. As she herself later admitted, her cherished dream was to shake hands with American President Bill Clinton. Arriving in 1995 as an employee of the letters department, Lewinsky managed not only to get to know Clinton, but also to attract his attention. As it became known later, during her internship, Monica Lewinsky entered into a sexual relationship with the president, which lasted until 1997, when Lewinsky was transferred to work at the Pentagon. However, there is evidence that Clinton and Monica met after the girl went for a promotion.
One way or another, Monica Lewinsky spoke about her relationship with the president of one of the Pentagon employees named Linda Tripp. Lewinsky did not know that Linda was recording all their conversations on a tape recorder, so she was quite frank. After receiving incriminating information, Linda handed the tapes to Attorney Kenneth Starr. It should be noted that the name Tripp was associated with several other political scandals of that time, but neither her motives nor the degree of involvement are known. Kenneth Starr conducted an independent investigation, during which, in particular, Lewinsky handed him her dress, stained with Clinton's seminal fluid. This dress became the only physical evidence that the connection actually took place. Starr released the results of the investigation, forcing the president in 1998 to confess that he had an "inappropriate relationship" with Monica Lewinsky.

The discrepancy in the testimony gave rise to accuse Clinton of perjury, which, in turn, made it possible to initiate the impeachment procedure, that is, the early termination of presidential powers. However, the US Senate acquitted the president by allowing him to work until the end of his term. However, his reputation was tarnished.
As for Monica herself, in 1999 she publicly apologized for her participation in this scandal, saying that she did not want such a development of events. For a certain time, she was at the peak of popularity: she wrote a book, was a guest of numerous talk shows and even hosted a program on television. But a few years later, it turned out that Lewinsky was depressed, and her life was not going well.
