According to legend, if a person finds a fern flower on the day of Ivan Kupala, then secret knowledge will be revealed to him - he will be able to see where the treasures are buried, understand the language of animals and even command the spirits. However, finding this flower is very difficult. Many people tried to find it, but no one was able to see the mysterious flower.
What a fern flower looks like
In fact, a fern never has flowers. These plants belong to the fern division, and they reproduce by spores or root shoots. Spores form in sporophylls on the underside of leaves. If you look at the fern from below, you can see small brown dots - they can be called "fern flowers".
There is a version that people often mistook ordinary fireflies for a fern flower. There are a lot of them at this time of the year. This explains why people came up with the saying: "Not everyone can see, but not everyone can rip," because catching a firefly is not so easy. Also in the forests there are poisonous species of fern, which on a stuffy night with their vapors can cause hallucinations and visions in a person.
Amulet "fern flower"
Perun's color is another name for the fern flower in Slavic mythology. There is a legend about the origin of this symbol. Semargl, the protector of the sun, and the Bathing Lady, the goddess of the morning rays, fell in love with each other. But they could not be together, since Semargl could not leave the luminary for a single minute. But one day he could not stand it and in spite of his duty left the sun. Soon, Kupalnitsa and Semargl had two sons, who were named Kostroma and Kupala. In honor of the birth of the kids, Perun presented them with a Fern Flower, which possessed magical powers.
The Slavs believed that a person who possesses the flower of this mysterious plant possesses special power. The flower protects from the evil eye and protects from all kinds of troubles. The fern blooms only one night a year - on the birthday of the sons of Semargl and Kupalnitsa. According to the popular calendar, this is the day of the summer solstice.
The "fern flower" charm is an eight-pointed swastika. Now this amulet decoration is worn by people who are fond of Slavic culture and who want to protect themselves from the evil eye.
