Step 1
A traditional magnetic compass for hikers or hunters is similar in appearance to a large wristwatch. Its body is usually rounded. The top of the compass is covered with glass. Under it is a flat disc with circular markings. The disc can be split 360 degrees or 120 pieces. In the second case, the price of one division is equal to three degrees. The disc also contains letters indicating the sides of the horizon.
Step 2
In the center of the disk, a needle is stationary, on which an arrow made of magnetic material rotates freely. On river and sea vessels, as well as on airplanes, so-called gyroscopic compasses are usually installed. This massive device can be of various shapes and sizes. Such a device is highly resistant to vibrations, rolling and deformation. This type of compass is equipped with a built-in gyroscope, therefore it points to the true, and not to the magnetic pole of the planet. In everyday practice, travel enthusiasts rarely encounter such devices.
