The compass is a reliable assistant for tourists, fishermen and hunters. It helps to feel confident even in unfamiliar forest areas. Possessing the skills of working with this device, you can navigate the terrain, choosing the right direction of movement and not risking getting lost. The tourist magnetic compass is cheap, practical and simple in design.

Instructions

Step 1

A traditional magnetic compass for hikers or hunters is similar in appearance to a large wristwatch. Its body is usually rounded. The top of the compass is covered with glass. Under it is a flat disc with circular markings. The disc can be split 360 degrees or 120 pieces. In the second case, the price of one division is equal to three degrees. The disc also contains letters indicating the sides of the horizon.

Step 2

In the center of the disk, a needle is stationary, on which an arrow made of magnetic material rotates freely. As a rule, the compass is equipped with a special brake lever that fixes the needle in a stationary state when the device is not in use. Before use, the lever is squeezed out, after which the magnetic needle goes into a free state, pointing one end to the north, the other to the south. To facilitate the guidance of the compass to the landmark, the device is equipped with a sighting device.

Step 3

A military compass looks like a tourist compass, but it can include a ruler and an additional scale on the disk, marked in thousandths of a radian. As a rule, such devices are made in a metal case. The sighting device here has a more imposing appearance and allows for a simple survey of the area. The military compass can be equipped with a magnifying lens for viewing cartographic materials. Such a device allows you to determine the direction of movement with greater accuracy.

Step 4

There are special compasses for geologists. Such a professional device, as a rule, is equipped with protection against adverse external influences and an additional counterclockwise scale. It also has a built-in clinometer and other useful devices through which you can, for example, quickly determine the angles of individual layers of geological rocks. The geological compass can be supplied with a durable cover that protects the device from impacts, and therefore is indispensable for transportation.

Step 5

On river and sea vessels, as well as on airplanes, so-called gyroscopic compasses are usually installed. This massive device can be of various shapes and sizes. Such a device is highly resistant to vibrations, rolling and deformation. This type of compass is equipped with a built-in gyroscope, therefore it points to the true, and not to the magnetic pole of the planet. In everyday practice, travel enthusiasts rarely encounter such devices.
