The extreme value of an indicator is usually called a record. Temperature records are set by meteorologists, comparing readings that seemed to them worthy of being called a record with the data already available. The main condition is that the temperature must be measured with calibrated instruments at the same point on the earth's surface. You can try to fix such a record yourself. True, it will not be officially approved.
Necessary
- - outdoor thermometer;
- - navigator;
- - data of observations of the weather for several years.
Instructions
Step 1
Start measuring the outside temperature. You can use the most common thermometer for this. Hang it in the shade. Weather stations usually measure the temperature every 3 hours, starting at midnight. You can do the same.
Step 2
Determine the coordinates of the place where you will be observing. This can be done using a navigator or the most common geographic map.
Step 3
Make a table in which you will enter data. In this case, it is more convenient not the school weather calendar, but a three-column table. Write the year and month at the top, and the numbers in the first column. You will have to split each cell of the second and third columns into as many lines as you will make observations. In the second column, write the observation time, in the third - the thermometer reading.
Step 4
Enter data within a month. Then compare the readings and note the maximum and minimum. These will be temperature records for the time of your observations, that is, for a month. Determine the extreme values for the year in the same way. The Hydrometeorological Center has at its disposal data on temperatures for many decades, so meteorologists may not recognize your modest record. But as an experiment, this home observation is fine. It is also useful in order to show students how temperature monitoring is carried out and what an extreme value is.
Step 5
Records of average daily temperatures can also be recorded. First, find the averages themselves. To do this, add up the thermometer readings per day and divide by the number of observations. If you would like to conduct a similar experiment, it is best to calculate the average daily temperature right away and record it in your calendar by adding a fourth column or writing the value under the date. Compare the average daily temperatures for a month or a year and determine the highest and lowest.
Step 6
If you already have observations from several years, find the extreme temperature for a specific day. To do this, you need to compare the highest or lowest values for a given day for all years. The extreme reading will be the temperature record for May 3 or January 29. At weather stations, they do the same, only they have to compare much more readings than at home or at school.
