The lack of litter bins on the streets, in parks and squares is one of the most common complaints from city dwellers against the city authorities. In some cases, this is explained by ordinary theft, but there are places where urns never happen. One of these places is the subway.
Absence of necessity
To a certain extent, the absence of trash bins at metro stations is due to the fact that trash bins are not needed there. The time that a person spends in the subway is very short, during this time he should not have accumulated anything that would have to be thrown away.
Smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages on the subway is prohibited, therefore, there should be no question of where to throw a cigarette butt or an empty beer can.
Eating food on the subway is also not accepted, and some types of food are even prohibited on pain of a fine, for example, ice cream, because it can stain the clothes of other passengers.
Thus, the absence of trash bins in the metro is due to the fact that there would be nothing to throw away in them. True, not all passengers adhere to the rules, unfortunately, but no one is obliged to focus on violators. Therefore, trash cans are not installed in the metro, although a huge amount of garbage has to be removed every day.
Danger of trash cans in the subway
The absence of trash bins in the metro is explained not only by their uselessness, but also by the danger they can pose.
The fact is that it was not always like this. For example, back in the 80s of the last century, there were enough ballot boxes in the London Underground. Because of one of them, the trouble happened in 1987.
Disaster struck at King Cross station. Someone threw a match into one of the urns, forgetting to extinguish it. Most likely it was a smoker. Of course, in the Lodnon metro, no one has canceled the ban on smoking either, but, unfortunately, in all countries there are people who tend to ignore the rules and prohibitions.
The match caught fire in the trash can. Then the fire began to spread. Ultimately, a huge fire began at the station, as a result of which more than 30 people died. Since it is impossible to keep track of every violator of the rules, it is better to completely eliminate the likelihood of such incidents by removing the trash cans.
Currently, along with fires, there is another danger - terrorist attacks. The urn is one of the most convenient places to hide an explosive device. The less the terrorists have the opportunity to carry out their criminal plans, the safer, so there should be no ballot boxes in the metro.
