In the manufacture of metal structures in a home workshop, sometimes you have to deal with the need to melt the metal. An electric oven will help to cope with this task. Such a device is capable of melting many metals, including iron. By making a stove with your own hands, you will significantly expand your capabilities in iron processing.

Instructions

Step 1

Determine the dimensions of the electric oven. They are not standard, but depend on the goals you set for yourself and the amount of iron you intend to smelt. Also consider the power supply and the output voltage of the transformer. With a furnace volume of 100x60x50 mm, several tens of grams of metal can be melted.

Step 2

Use brushes from a powerful electric motor as electrodes for an electric melting furnace. If this is not possible, make brushes from a used graphite electrode by drilling two holes in it from the side. Insert stranded copper wire into the holes. To improve contact with the graphite powder on the inside of the electrodes, make a notch with a file.

Step 3

Use mica to make the lining of the furnace walls. Reinforce the outer walls with about 10 mm thick asbestos tiles. Tie the walls with soft copper wire.

Step 4

Make a brick lining for the stove by placing it on a metal pallet with rims.

Step 5

Get the graphite powder from the spent rods using a file with a large notch.

Step 6

To connect the stove to the electrical network, use a 25 V step-down transformer. Connect the assembled stove to the transformer with thick copper wires with outer insulation. Preheat the finished furnace before melting.

Step 7

To melt iron, first make a hole in the middle of the furnace using a special spatula. Put a portion of metal in it and bury it. If you use different sized scrap as starting material, first place the largest piece in the oven and then add the smaller pieces.

Step 8

After the metal has cooled, turn it over and melt it again. Repeat the operation several times until the workpiece is spherical, indicating good melt quality.

Step 9

If necessary, after melting, forge the metal workpiece using an anvil and a small hammer.

Step 10

Be careful when melting. The mains switch of the transformer must be located near the oven so that the device can be turned off at any time. Do not leave the oven running unattended.
