What is context

The context is a piece of text or a small complete text that defines the semantic framework of the topic under discussion.

The concept of context

The word "context" has its roots in the Latin word "contextus", which literally means "connection" or "connection". The use of this word is most common in the humanities, primarily those related to language - linguistics, linguistics and the like. In this case, the term "context" is usually used when it is necessary to designate a general semantic field in which a particular object appears. For example, when applied to a newspaper article, this word can be used to indicate the general orientation of the publication in which it is printed.

At the same time, however, the concept of "context" is also used in other spheres of human and social life. Thus, in the social sciences, the word "context" is often used to denote the conditions or situation in which an event took place. For example, it can be used to describe the circumstances in which an offense was committed.

Using context

The importance of context in some cases can become crucial for the interpretation of a particular term or concept, since its meanings may differ in different contexts. In this case, most often we are talking about the use of polysemantic words and expressions that, in writing or in oral speech, do not have other features that allow one to identify the meanings embedded in them.

A simple example of this importance of context is the use of the word crane. As you know, in the Russian language this word has several meanings at the same time, among which, in particular, a crane designed for lifting loads, and a water tap. At the same time, neither in written nor in oral speech, these words differ from each other by any peculiarities of writing or pronunciation.

Nevertheless, the context in which this word is used usually allows one to uniquely identify the meaning put into it. So, for example, it is obvious that the phrase "The presence of a crane will allow the construction of a residential building to be completed on time" refers to a tower crane with which you can lift loads. And the phrase "The pressure of the water in the tap during the last month leaves much to be desired", of course, refers to the tap. At the same time, neither the one nor the other phrase contains any definition of the term "crane", and the conclusion regarding its content is made solely on the basis of the context.
