Buttercup is the name of an extensive genus of plants from the buttercup family. The genus includes annual and perennial grasses that grow on wet soil or in water. All buttercups contain pungent, sometimes poisonous juice.

In total, there are more than 350 species of buttercups in nature. About 40 species of these plants grow in the European part of Russia. The buttercup flower has five petals, usually bright yellow in color. Flowers can be single or collected in inflorescences. In different types of buttercup, alternate, dissected or whole leaves can be observed. The most common in our country are caustic buttercup, creeping buttercup, burning buttercup and poisonous buttercup.

Buttercup pungent is found everywhere in the north and in the central part of Russia. It is popularly known as night blindness. The plant reaches a height of 20-50 cm. Buttercup flowers are acrid, bright yellow, small and solitary. Their diameter is 2 cm. The lower leaves of the plant have a petiole 5-10 cm long, the upper leaves are planted on the stem. Buttercup pungent is poisonous, contains a volatile substance with a pungent odor, irritating to the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and larynx.

Buttercup creeping is a perennial 15-40 cm high. It is widely distributed in the European part of Russia. This plant is characterized by a thick creeping stem and a short branched root. The lanceolate, tripartite leaves of the plant have long petioles. Flowers are golden yellow single, 2-3 cm in diameter.

Buttercup grows in damp meadows and sedge swamps. It reaches a height of 20-50 cm. The root molding of a spindle-shaped plant has a long petiole. The narrow upper leaves are planted on a stem. The flowers are small, 9-12 mm in diameter. With prolonged contact with the skin, Buttercup burning can cause severe irritation and even blistering.

Poisonous buttercup reaches a height of 10-70 cm. It grows in muddy places, along the banks of water bodies, near ditches. The shiny, slightly fleshy leaves of this species are divided into three rounded lobes. Light yellow small flowers reach a diameter of 7-10 mm. The plant is extremely poisonous.
