The rules for overtaking are described in detail in the traffic rules and are illustrated with signs that prohibit or, conversely, allow overtaking other cars. Be sure to study them, and if you are not sure that you have memorized everything correctly, put the traffic rules book in the car and carry it with you, so that if necessary (not during the overtaking itself, of course, but by parking on the side of the road or waiting for the green light of a traffic light) check with them and be absolutely sure that you are doing everything right.

Step 1

The no overtaking sign is a white circle with a red border around the edge. Inside it, two passenger cars are schematically depicted, on the left - red, on the right - black (3.20). There is also a sign prohibiting overtaking for trucks only, in which case the left red car is a truck (3.22). In different countries, the sign may vary somewhat. For example, in Finland it will not be white, but yellow, but the schematic representation of the two cars is approximately the same everywhere.

The end of the prohibition on overtaking is indicated by the same sign, however, the border around the circle and the cars are gray or black, and the picture itself is crossed out obliquely by five lines. The sign is most often accompanied by markings: overtaking is prohibited when opposite lanes are separated by one or two solid lines (continuous markings are prohibited to cross always and under any conditions). However, the prohibition on overtaking is not always indicated by these signs. There are a number of rules under which it is also impossible to overtake the car in front, and other signs that a priori imply this.

Step 2

Overtaking is prohibited "at the end of an ascent, on dangerous turns and in other areas with limited visibility" (SDA, 11.4), including it is not recommended to overtake when the road is foggy, heavy rain is pouring, heavy snow is falling, and you are not be able to see the oncoming car before it's too late.

Step 3

If you are driving in a "locomotive" behind a wagon, there are many other cars ahead and behind you, which are also impatient to overtake a slowly moving truck, do not rush to drive into the oncoming lane. First, make sure that no other car from your "train" has already started the same maneuver (SDA, 11.2). Wait until the car that started overtaking first completes it. Truck drivers often help cars - they push themselves to the side of the road and blink with the left turn signal if the path ahead is clear. After completing the maneuver, do not forget to thank the trucker, "blinking" the emergency gang, he will be pleased.

Step 4

You cannot overtake cars if you are leaving or approaching an intersection equipped with traffic lights, or if you are driving not on the main road, but there is an unregulated intersection ahead (SDA, 11.4). If you see a pedestrian crossing ahead, make sure there are no people on it and no one is going to cross the road any time soon before starting the maneuver. A sign that you are approaching a railway crossing is equivalent to a sign that prohibits overtaking. It begins to operate 100 m before the railroad bed. Bridges, tunnels, overpasses also urge you to wait with any dangerous maneuvers, and you only need to drive to the end of such a section along your own lane.
