In 1790, shortly after the United States became independent from Great Britain, at the initiative of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, the country's Congress decided to start building the navy. The young state really needed him, because at that time its naval forces consisted of only 10 small ships. The coast guard was also part of the emerging fleet.
The list of tasks of the Coast Guard is quite extensive. It is responsible for enforcing maritime laws in the territorial waters of the United States, and must take all possible measures to protect the environment, the population, the safety of American citizens, and the interests of the United States (economic and political) in any maritime region. And not only in those that are subject to US sovereignty, but, if necessary, in international waters. The Coast Guard reports directly to the federal government.
The annual Coast Guard Day celebration takes place in the town of Grand Haven, located in Michigan, on the eastern shore of the lake of the same name. The authorities of this city traditionally sponsor a large-scale and colorful festival. This event annually attracts a large number of spectators, not only US citizens, but also foreign tourists, especially from neighboring Canada. Current and former Coast Guard officers, as well as servicemen of other branches of the armed forces and retirees, come to celebrate their professional holiday.
A colorful parade, demonstrations on the water, fireworks, concerts of brass bands and much more - all this makes the day of August 4 a real holiday that will be remembered for a long time by everyone present. Traditionally, during this holiday, the command of the coast guard in a solemn atmosphere awards the most distinguished employees.
