Romania is located in southeastern Europe, in the Danube River basin. Its area is 238 thousand square kilometers, it is the 12th largest in terms of territory in Europe and 80th in the world. Romania is located in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula, bordered in the north with Ukraine, in the east with Moldova, in the south with Bulgaria, in the west with Hungary and Serbia. On the southern side, Romania is washed by the Black Sea. Most of the territory is occupied by the Carpathian Mountains with the highest point, Mount Moldovyanu. The largest river in the country is the Danube.

Romania is one of the greenest countries in Europe. Coniferous and deciduous forests occupy about a quarter of its entire territory. This was achieved thanks to the reforestation program, which has been operating in the country since 1950. Large deposits of oil and natural gas have been discovered in Romania. However, their reserves are significantly depleted, and Romania has to import most of the raw materials for its industrial needs. The most important natural resources are fertile soils and rivers of the country.

Romania consists of 8 development regions, which corresponds to the federal districts in Russia. The development regions are divided into 41 counties. Romania was declared an independent state in 1877, when the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia united under the name "The Principality of Romania". Following the results of the First World War, Romania, which was an ally of the Entente, annexed Transylvania and Bessarabia to its territory. In World War II, Romania initially fought on the side of Germany. In 1944, the pro-fascist government of Romania was overthrown and the country joined the anti-Hitler coalition.

As a result of the Romanian Revolution in 1989, the dictator was overthrown and executed. A year later, Romania held the first democratic presidential and parliamentary elections. In 2004, Romania became a member of NATO, and in 2007 joined the European Union.

The capital of the state is the city of Bucharest with a population of 1.8 million people. Apart from the capital, major cities are Iasi, Timisoara and Constanta. The state language is Romanian.
