Most butterflies live from several days to three months, and die in the fall. But there are also such species, the life expectancy of which is several years and which are able to adapt to harsh conditions. Such butterflies hibernate in winter. With the onset of autumn, they hide in various shelters, where they wait out the cold.

Such common butterflies in central Russia, such as urticaria, cabbage and lemongrass, wrap themselves with their own wings like a blanket and climb into a deep crevice or hollow. Many of them prefer to seek refuge in human homes.

There are times when butterflies do not hide far enough from heating pipes or stoves. Because of the heat, they can wake up ahead of time, fly out into the cold and die.

Some butterflies do not go into hibernation in winter. They are migratory, and like birds fly away to warmer regions every autumn.

It is also curious to know where the butterflies hide at night. Most species sleep near the feeding site. They cling with their paws to the back of a leaf or to a stalk of grass, fold their wings and fall asleep. In this position, they are maximally protected from danger.

Large butterflies (for example, the Peacock's Eye) hide in the trees. Small ones can fall asleep directly on flowers. In this position, you can find moths, bluebirds, bears.

Many butterflies spend the night collectively. So, helicondas moths spend the night in groups of 4 to 15 individuals. These butterflies choose some twig as a place to sleep. Butterflies of the Heliconius charithonius species always sleep in the same place, where they can fly from afar. Scientists have proven empirically that if you replace the branch chosen by butterflies with another, they will continue to spend the night in the old place.
