Backstage - a backstage area where the preparation of the defile, theatrical performance, concert and other entertainment event takes place. There is a concept of "backstage shooting", in which the photographer captures all the working moments that take place behind the scenes.

What is backstage
What is backstage

Another word of the English language has taken root in Russia and has received the definition of "behind the scenes, offscreen, behind the scenes, secret." That is, this is a professional space - the backstage of a theater, concert venue, television studio, and the like.

In the backstage zone, the designer keeps collections for fashion shows. Here, numerous stylists, make-up artists and hairdressers work on creating images of models. The right to access the backstage zone can be obtained by persons of special status, acquaintances and friends of designers, as well as photographers, for whom a badge serves as a pass. In the arsenal of the latter there is also the term "backstage shooting".

What it is

We are talking about work behind the scenes. The photographer captures working moments: how the models are painted, dressed and made ready for display; how everyone runs and fusses and does their job. That is, the entire seamy side of the shooting, captured by the photographer, is called the backstage. For example, if we compare it with reportage shooting, then it should have at least some kind of plot, preferably interesting and traceable. Backs can be presented as unrelated photos taken in different places. Everything that is not included in the main photoset is photographed on the backstage. At this moment, the person on the other side of the lens pursues only one goal - to show the wrong side of what is happening on the podium, concert venue or studio - what atmosphere reigned and what was not included in the main shots.

Off-screen shooting capabilities

Professional processing of photos from backs is usually not carried out, except for cases when such shooting is provided initially. Very often, photographers process such photos in black and white with high contrast - this allows you to hide various color defects and noise, as well as fully convey the mood that reigned on the site. When shooting backstage, photographers, as a rule, do not use a flash, but simply experiment with the camera itself - shoot at a long exposure without any special technical requirements for quality. This is due to the very genre of photography. Although on backstages, you can get quite successful "quick" portraits.

Models at such events either do not want to be photographed, or willingly make contact. They are interested in seeing the "behind the scenes" through the eyes of a professional. The customer of the backstage photographer is often the event organizer himself, if he is interested in wide coverage of this event in the media. In this case, the photographer devotes most of his time to him, and then goes to shoot models, make-up artists, hairdressers and all those whose hands are doing the common cause.
