Step 1

In 2006-2011, Syria experienced a severe drought. This led to the death of livestock and crops by 80%. The waste and mismanagement of natural resources preceded land desertification and water shortages. Almost a million people were left without a livelihood. Due to the situation, the rural population, pastoralists and farmers moved to cities. Additionally, Iraqi refugees came to Syrian cities to live after the invasion of American troops into their country. Unemployment rose rapidly. Tensions in the cities increased, which to some extent contributed to the armed conflict.

Step 2

The cause of the outbreak of the civil war was the "Arab Spring". It began with a wave of coups and demonstrations in the Arab states on December 18, 2010. Coups took place in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Libya. The people of Syria, who were dissatisfied with the authoritarian rule of President Bashar al-Assad, the socio-political system of the government, the domination of the Alawites in power structures, went to a public demonstration on January 26, 2011. The population also voiced slogans against corruption and the Kurdish problem.

Step 3

Massive protests in Syria began on March 15, 2011. Over time, the situation escalated into a popular uprising. The demonstrators demanded the resignation of Assad and his government. The President used tanks and snipers to suppress the uprising. Cut off water and electricity. The army laid siege to several cities. There were cases when soldiers who refused to shoot at civilians were shot on the spot. What caused massive desertions in the Syrian army.

Step 4

At the end of March, Bashar al-Assad dismissed the cabinet of ministers, lifted the state of emergency and pardoned political prisoners. However, this did not save the day. Since the rebels and defectors from the regular army united and formed fighting units. By the end of 2011, they began fighting under the banner of the Free Syrian Army.

Step 5

In 2012, other countries began to take part in the confrontation. The rebels were supplied with weapons by Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar. The Russian Foreign Ministry openly acknowledged the fact of aid to the Syrian government with arms. Also on the side of Bashar were the DPRK, Venezuela and Iran. The Syrian Information Minister said that people from 83 countries of the world are participating in the civil war. And the share of foreigners in the opposition reaches 85%. We can say that a small world war is going on in the Arab state.

Step 6

The armed conflict continues. On June 3, 2014, the presidential elections were held, where Bashar al-Assad won. Its results were not recognized by the opposition and a number of foreign countries.
