Despite the fact that moles are of considerable benefit, it is customary to fight with them in summer cottages, since they not only spoil the appearance of the lawn or lawn with their mounds, but also destroy the plants. As a rule, they are fought with very cruel methods. However, there are also humane ways to drive them away from the site.
The principle of operation of the "ratchet"
There are many methods of dealing with "diggers". You can expel a mole from the site either temporarily or permanently. The second methods are somewhat more difficult to execute. But the first ones are quite realizable. Among them, the planting of pungent-smelling plants and the installation of sound repellents. Not everyone will agree to plant non-fertile plants on their site. In addition, they will not give an instant effect. But the installation of various "ratchets" is quite possible.
The essence of the work of such a "ratchet-noisemaker" is very simple. Moles have a very keen hearing that compensates for low vision, and therefore it is quite easy to frighten them even with a weak noise. Scarers create constant noise and vibrations that make life impossible for a mole in such conditions. As a result, the animal leaves the site on its own.
The simplest repeller is a spinner bottle, which is easy enough to make at home.
How to make a bottle repeller
First, a water pipe is driven into the wormhole. Its lower end must necessarily enter the ground deeper than the wormhole, and a long pin with a diameter of 8-10 mm is put on its upper end, which is reinforced in the center with a wooden cork.
To make the "ratchet-noisemaker" itself, it is enough to have an empty plastic bottle. A hole is pre-drilled in the bottom of the bottle, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the diameter of the pin. The sides of the bottle are cut and bent outward so that blades are obtained. There must be at least four such blades. After that, the bottle is "put" on the pin.
Even at the slightest breath, the wind spins the bottle due to the blades. When turning on the pin, it not only makes noise, but also creates additional vibrations that are transmitted through the hollow pipe directly into the wormhole. Due to the resonance, an additional unpleasant hum is created, which is very sensitive to the subtle hearing of the mole.
Such "turntables" give the best effect if they are placed along all the mole passages. They can also be used to scare away birds. For this purpose, it is recommended to stick foil onto the curved blades of the bottle.
However, such self-made scarers have a "side effect" - in windy weather, they create a fairly strong noise, which becomes noticeable not only to the "excavator", but also to the owner of the site.
In addition, one should not forget that moles are not uniquely harmful - they also bring benefits, destroying pests and loosening the soil.
