Do you like tinkering? And also go to the forest for mushrooms and berries and travel? Combine your passions and make a DIY compass. You will no doubt use it with pride!
Necessary
- - a piece of steel wire;
- - a small piece of tin;
- - a box of cream;
- - Oil paint;
- - cardboard;
- - linen buttons;
- - thick paper;
- - glue;
- - tools.
Instructions
Step 1
Take a round box with a lid. You can take a plastic box of cream or powder. No plastic - take a metal one from shoe polish. Anneal it, remove the scale and paint with oil paint.
Step 2
Using a compass, draw the bottom out of the cardboard (a circle around the inside diameter of the box). Cut it out and make a flat 2mm hole in the center. Fasten the linen button to it so that the protruding part of the button is at the bottom.
Step 3
Make a card out of thick paper (its diameter is also equal to the diameter of the box), paint with paint and cut out. Glue to the bottom, and place the bottom in the box. Make a board out of cardboard and, greased with glue, place it tightly in the jar. Press firmly.
Step 4
Make the side 5-6 mm below the top edge of the box. Cut out a circle from the plexiglass for the compass glazing, make a hole in the center and insert the second linen button, convex part up. Fasten the glazing to the edge with a steel wire snap ring. Linen buttons serve as thrust bearings in which the axis with an arrow rotates.
Step 5
Make an arrow shaft out of wire that can rotate freely in the thrust bearings. File the ends of the axle with a file and a knife sharpening bar.
Step 6
Take a tin, make an arrow out of it. Punch a hole in the finished arrow so that the axle fits snugly. Take the axle in your hand and check if the needle is balanced or not. File the overhanging end with a file if necessary. Remove the arrow from the axle and magnetize it. First, at one end of the arrow, make a marking with a needle - the letter N, then take a magnet and draw its south pole (usually indicated in red) from the center to the end of the arrow. Then repeat the procedure on the other side, only with the North Pole. Repeat this process several times.
Step 7
Place the arrow on the axis - it will immediately take a certain position and point to the north. Place the axle in the bearings and the compass is ready.
