Airport history

The construction of the airport began in 1956 near the village of Yelgazino, Podolsk region. On April 7, 1962, an order was issued to organize the Moscow Domodedovo airport. This date is considered his birthday. A year later, postal and cargo flights on the Il-18 and Tu-104 air liners began to operate from the airport.

The first passenger flight from the airport took place on March 25, 1964 on the route Moscow - Sverdlovsk. Regular flights began to operate only in 1966. Until the 1990s, the terminal served main routes to the Urals, the Volga region, Siberia, Central Asia and the Far East. The airport in 1991 came under the control of the East Line travel agency. And in 1992, thanks to the efforts of the directors of the travel company, Domodedovo acquired the status of an international airport.

In 1999, the entire airport complex was reconstructed, and passenger terminals were expanded from 2004 to 2008. In 2011, Domodedovo was recognized as the best airport in Eastern Europe.

According to the results of 2012, the air terminal is considered the largest in terms of passenger traffic in the country, and is also included in the list of the busiest airports in Europe. It is located 22 km from the Moscow Ring Road southeast of the center of Moscow. The station complex has an airfield, which is formed by two parallel runways, independent of each other. This makes Domodedovo the only Moscow airport capable of simultaneously performing landing and take-off operations on its lanes.

The airport serves approximately 28.2 million passengers every year. Domodedovo's partners are 28 Russian and 48 foreign airlines. Transaero, Globus, RusLine, Moskovia, VIM-avia and S7 Airlines are considered to be the airport based companies. Flights are operated to 247 destinations around the world, among which there are unique flights for the Moscow aviation hub.

Domodedovo is capable of receiving and servicing the Airbus A380, the giant of passenger air transportation. The plans of the airport managers include the construction of new runways, expansion of the territory, improvement of throughput and the opening of a new airport complex.

For the convenience of passengers, Aeroexpress trains run to the airport without stops, as well as electric trains, buses and route taxis.
