Fragrant caramel monpensier, once completely unfairly ousted from the sweets market, is regaining its former popularity among the sweet tooth. A box of lollipops of the most unimaginable colors and shapes is a great treat for children, a perfect gift for a loved one on a romantic date, or an interesting idea for a corporate souvenir.

Montpensier - a timeless delicacy
Montpensier - a timeless delicacy

Montpensier is a miniature candy caramel of various tastes and colors, striking with an enchanting fruity aroma. The main difference between monpensier and the usual candies is their small size - such candies resemble peas. Known since the 19th century, these sweets have earned a special love for those with a sweet tooth due to the elegance of their performance. Traditionally, monpansiers are sold in tin boxes, decorated with a variety of paintings and various themed images.

History of Montpensier

For the first time in Russia, sweets appeared in the middle of the nineteenth century. As you might guess from the name, France became the birthplace of the new dessert. According to one of the widespread versions, the inventor of sweets is a famous Parisian confectioner named Montpensier. According to another source, the sweetness owes its appearance to Anne-Marie-Louise Montpensier - the heroine of Dumas' historical novels, known as La grande Mademoiselle, and just a big lover of candies.

Interestingly, on the territory of France itself, caramel was named berlingo, according to the name of the pastry chef. The current name of these sweets was adopted in the Russian Empire in order to distinguish sweets from other types of transparent caramel and traditional large lollipops in the shape of a rooster and a bear. Since the name "lollipop" is applicable only to small lollipop sweets, the trade name "lollipop lollipop" is meaningless. Montpensier is a proper name already meaning "little candy".

Currently, monpansiers are not so popular, but they are still in demand among children and those who follow the figure. After all, this ancient delicacy has excellent taste, and a few mini-candies can satisfy cravings for sweets without adding extra volume at the waist. The calorie content of one such candy, as a rule, does not exceed 7-10 kcal, which is quite acceptable even for strict diets based on minimizing the amount of carbohydrates in the diet.

How mongpensier is prepared

Montpensier is not a complex confectionery creation that requires intricate ingredients and special professional skills. These are ordinary candies, the recipe for which has not changed over the years. The candy process uses commonly available citric acid, sugar, various fruit essences and optionally alcoholic beverages like cognac or brandy to add flavor to the product.
